Reporting Red-Head Clusters

We are tracking locations in Minnesota where groupings or 'clusters' of Red-Heads exist. If you know of a cluster of two or more breeding pairs of Red-Heads are nesting, let us know!

  1. Check Reported Locations to see whether the cluster has already been identified.
  2. If not, fill out the Cluster Documentation Form below and send it in.

In particular, if you're a golfer, our golf course coordinator wants to hear from you! If you're a golfer, let us know of any Red-Heads you see. More info here.

Reported Locations

Nesting Red-headed Woodpeckers are very territorial. They will defend their nesting, roosting and cache sites. Of course, they also have specific habitat needs. So, where habitat is good, concentrations of Red-Heads can be found fairly close together. Perhaps only hundreds of yards from pair-to-pair. This is known as a cluster.

You can help us to identify Red-Head locations. Use the document above to report a cluster of nesting Red-Heads. Send it to us via email or postal mail and we'll put it onto our reported locations map.

When reporting a location, it's helpful if you can provide the GPS coordinates. For example, 45.89765453434688 latitude and -92.96630859375 longitude. You can use this link to zero in on the location and get the coordinates.
